Boys Volleyball

Last school year my son played club volleyball with other high school students, mostly from WJHS. He was on West Jordan’s JV team. Arthur has loved volleyball for a long time. I attempted to sign him up for the volleyball camp at West Jordan when he was in eighth grade, but when I went to pay the fee I found out the camp was only for girls. I had thought about signing him up for club volleyball, but didn’t because I was intimidated by the thought of driving him all over for practices and games. I am so glad that Arthur was finally able to play volleyball his senior year. He got himself to practices, and his games were very fun to watch. They were held at different high schools and rec centers. There wasn’t much seating, and admission was free

I was excited to find out that boys volleyball was going to be a school sponsored sport in Jordan District. I wished that it had happened sooner so that Arthur would have been able to participate. I love that students have the opportunity to participate in school sports.

Now that students will be able to use their school’s facilities to practice and have games, more students will probably be able to participate. I am happy for the students that want to participate in boys volleyball.

There are a couple changes that happen when a sport becomes sponsored that I didn’t think about. One of these things is the possibility of being non-compliant with Title 9. Another thing is the school charging admission to the games. Charging admission might seem unfair, but the sport must approach or accomplish financial self sufficiency.

I am interested in unintended consequences. I believe it is impossible to know the every possible consequence of a decision, but that it is important to have people with experience and expertise search and calculate the possibilities then study and discuss them. Part of a school board’s job is to discuss the possibilities associated with it’s decisions. I like that patrons are allowed to take part in this process by attending in person or electronically most board meetings, contact any board member to ask questions or give input, and speak publicly during public comments.

I’m still happy that boys volleyball is sponsored and hope that the participants have a great time.
